Melbourne Zoo is mourning the sudden and unexpected loss of Kimya, a 20-year-old western lowland gorilla who passed away on Saturday morning. Kimya, who arrived at the zoo in 2013 from the Taronga Conservation Society, was cherished by staff and visitors alike. She quickly bonded with male gorilla Otana, and in 2015, she became the first gorilla to give birth at Melbourne Zoo since 1984, welcoming her daughter Kanzi.
Zoo director Sheri Horiszny expressed deep sorrow over Kimya's passing, stating, "We are all heartbroken; she was a wonderful gorilla." The zoo community, including staff, members, and visitors, have fondly watched Kimya over the years, especially as she embraced motherhood and raised Kanzi. Her loss is profoundly felt by all who knew her.
A full necropsy is being conducted to determine the cause of Kimya's sudden death. The zoo's dedicated team of keepers, many of whom have cared for her since her arrival, are particularly affected by this loss. As a critically endangered species, the death of Kimya underscores the challenges faced in gorilla conservation efforts.
Kimya was remembered as an intelligent, observant, and independent gorilla, as well as a loving mother who gently imparted essential skills to her daughter. Her presence will be deeply missed within the Melbourne Zoo community.
