Earthquake of Magnitude 4.4 Shakes Townsville and Surrounding Areas in Queensland

Residents along the northeastern coast of Queensland experienced a jolt on Saturday night as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake struck near Townsville.

According to Geoscience Australia, the seismic event occurred at approximately 9:31 PM at a depth of around 10 kilometers. The tremor was widely felt across the region, with reports indicating that its impact extended up to 300 kilometers north and south of Townsville.

Seismologist Phil Cummins from Geoscience Australia confirmed that the earthquake was relatively shallow, which contributed to its noticeable impact in the surrounding areas. Many residents reported experiencing shaking, though no significant damage or injuries have been recorded.

The Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre has assured that there is no tsunami threat to mainland Australia, nearby islands, or coastal regions as a result of the quake.

Earthquakes of this magnitude are not uncommon in Australia, but they often serve as a reminder of the country's geological activity. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and encourage residents to report any structural damage or concerns.
